Our Commitment to Cancer Care

Patient Support Services

In last 3 years we have been in the communities like: Nadarivatu medical area, Nadroga/Navosa medical area and Ra medical area, along with maritime area's like Rotuma, Nacula Village in the Yasawa's, Koro Island, Levuka and Taveuni.

Awareness & Education:

FCS conducts public campaigns, school visits, and corporate sessions to raise awareness about early detection, especially for breast, cervical and cancer—the most common types in Fiji. We are also trained by NSW Australian cancer council in tackling tobacco cessation program.

Our Projects

Tatarovi Project

Project Tatarovi (prevention) aims to reach the unreachable and provide cancer education and screening services. The Tatarovi project provides cancer education which includes presentations on breast, cervix and prostate cancer, screening for cervical and prostate cancer, and physical breast examination for breast cancer, education on HPV vaccination and the importance of menstrual hygiene, bra fitting program for our women and girls, smokelyzer screening, palliative support and distribution for palliative patients.

Community Palliative Care Program

Community Palliative Care Program focuses on training and upskilling community health workers, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills to deliver effective palliative care at the community level. The training sessions cover topics such as pain management, communication skills, and the psychological aspects of caring for palliative patients. Recognizing the impact of serious illness on families, the program offers support services to caregivers and loved ones. The program not only improves patient outcomes but also empowers community health workers to be effective advocates for palliative care in their communities.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji has partnered with the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales to expand access to HPV testing and treatment for women in the region. The newly introduced procedures are less invasive than conventional Pap smears, provide faster results, and have high accuracy rates. It is important to note that HPV testing is considered the gold standard for detecting HPV, enabling the early identification of cervical cancer, which is the second most prevalent cancer among Fijian women. To extend screening and treatment services to a wider population, the initial participants of the screen and treat program were women in Levuka, Galoa, and the Lyndhurst factory in Suva. The Fiji Cancer Society is proud to have been part of this two-week program and would like to express their gratitude to Lyndhurst Fiji for allowing them to conduct the program at their factory, as part of their efforts to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030.
